What is vehicle fleet insurance?
Vehicle fleet insurance covers a mixed group of vehicles under one policy — cars, vans, HGVs, minibuses and special types together. Every vehicle and its use is declared to the underwriter, who rates the whole fleet as a single risk.
- Mixed vehicle types on one schedule is standard practice
- Special types and plant can usually be included
- One certificate set covering the whole fleet
- Cover levels can differ vehicle by vehicle
How it works
1. Tell us about your fleet
Answer a few questions about your business, your vehicles and your drivers. It takes around three minutes.
2. We introduce you to a broker
Your enquiry is passed to an FCA-authorised fleet insurance broker whose insurers cover your trade and vehicle mix.
3. The broker quotes you
The broker discusses your requirements, provides the quotation and gives any advice. There is no obligation to take cover.

Most real fleets are not neat. A groundworks firm might run three vans, two tippers, a low loader and the director's car. A care provider might run twelve small cars and two wheelchair-accessible minibuses.
Vehicle fleet insurance exists for exactly that. Rather than fragmenting cover across separate policies by vehicle type, everything sits on one schedule and is rated as one risk.
Vehicle types that can sit on one fleet
Underwriters will normally accept a wide mix so long as every vehicle and its use is declared accurately.
- Cars, including pool, company and director vehicles
- Panel vans, Lutons, dropsides and pick-ups
- Rigid and articulated HGVs, tippers and tankers
- Taxis and private hire vehicles, usually on a specialist section
- Minibuses and wheelchair-accessible vehicles
- Agricultural vehicles, plant and special types used on the road
Where mixed fleets get complicated
A mixed fleet is priced against its riskiest component, so it is worth understanding what pulls the price up before you buy.
Where one vehicle class dramatically worsens the whole fleet rate — a single taxi among twenty cars, for example — a broker may recommend splitting it onto its own policy. That is a judgement the quoting specialist will make with you.
Keeping a mixed fleet compliant
Compliance and insurability go hand in hand. Insurers increasingly ask for evidence of the basics before quoting a mixed fleet.
- Every vehicle recorded on the Motor Insurance Database within seven days
- Valid MOT, tax and, where applicable, O-licence discs
- Documented daily walkaround checks for commercial vehicles
- Driver licence checks at least annually
- Tachograph and drivers' hours compliance for HGVs
Why quote through Fleet-Quote.co.uk
One policy, one renewal
A fleet policy puts every vehicle on a single schedule with one renewal date instead of separate policies falling due through the year.
Every vehicle type
Cars, vans, pick-ups, lorries, taxis and minibuses can all sit on the same schedule with one renewal date.
Three minutes of your time
You answer once. We pass your enquiry on rather than making you repeat the same questions to several brokers.
FCA-regulated introductions

Frequently asked questions
- Can HGVs and cars go on the same fleet policy?
- Yes. Mixed fleets combining cars, vans and HGVs are routine. The HGV element usually needs additional information such as O-licence details and goods carried.
- Are taxis and private hire vehicles accepted?
- Some fleet insurers accept them, others exclude them entirely. A taxi element narrows the market, so it is important to declare it at the outset rather than at renewal.
- Can I insure vehicles I hire in?
- Hired-in vehicles can usually be covered, either by adding them to the schedule for the hire period or through a hired-in plant and vehicle extension.
- What about vehicles that are off the road?
- Vehicles declared SORN can be held on the policy at a reduced laid-up rate covering fire and theft only, which is cheaper than removing and re-adding them.
- Do trailers need separate cover?
- Third-party liability for a towed trailer usually follows the towing vehicle, but damage to the trailer itself needs to be specifically insured.
