What is van fleet insurance?
Van fleet insurance covers two or more vans on a single motor policy. It is designed for trades and delivery operations, and insurers price it on what the vans carry, how far they travel and who drives them, rather than on each van separately.
- Cover from 2 vans upwards, mixed with cars if needed
- Own goods and hire and reward use both available
- Tools and goods in transit cover can be added
- Secure overnight parking lowers the premium
How it works
1. Tell us about your fleet
Answer a few questions about your business, your vehicles and your drivers. It takes around three minutes.
2. We introduce you to a broker
Your enquiry is passed to an FCA-authorised fleet insurance broker whose insurers cover your trade and vehicle mix.
3. The broker quotes you
The broker discusses your requirements, provides the quotation and gives any advice. There is no obligation to take cover.

Van fleets are the most common type of fleet policy in the UK, and the most varied. A two-van plumbing firm and a fifty-van courier network are rated in completely different ways, even though both are technically van fleets.
The distinction that matters most to an underwriter is what the vans carry and for whom. Carrying your own tools and materials is a very different risk from carrying other people's goods for payment.
Use types and why they change the price
Getting the use type wrong is the fastest way to have a claim declined, so it is worth being precise on the form.
- Carriage of own goods — you transport your own tools, stock and materials. The most common category for trades and usually the lowest rated.
- Hire and reward — you carry goods belonging to others for payment. Priced higher and required for couriers and haulage.
- Courier and multi-drop — high-frequency stopping and starting in busy areas, rated as its own class.
- Haulage — long-distance carriage of goods for reward, usually with an O-licence and goods in transit cover.
Cover that van fleets should not skip
Van claims are rarely just about the van. The contents, the downtime and the customer's goods usually cost more than the bodywork.
- Tools in transit — most standard fleet policies exclude tools left in a van overnight unless added
- Goods in transit — protects the customer's property while you are carrying it
- Replacement van cover so a written-off van does not stop the job
- Signwriting and vehicle conversion cover for racking, refrigeration and tail lifts
- Public liability, arranged alongside, for work carried out on site
Cutting the cost of a van fleet
Van fleet premiums respond well to practical, provable risk management.
- Fit deadlocks, slam locks and alarms and declare them
- Empty vans of tools overnight and say so on the proposal
- Park in a locked yard rather than on the road
- Use telematics to evidence driving standards
- Restrict driving to over-25s where the workforce allows
- Keep a clean confirmed claims experience letter to hand at renewal
Why quote through Fleet-Quote.co.uk
One policy, one renewal
A fleet policy puts every vehicle on a single schedule with one renewal date instead of separate policies falling due through the year.
Every vehicle type
Cars, vans, pick-ups, lorries, taxis and minibuses can all sit on the same schedule with one renewal date.
Three minutes of your time
You answer once. We pass your enquiry on rather than making you repeat the same questions to several brokers.
FCA-regulated introductions
We are an introducer, not a broker or insurer. Enquiries are only ever passed to firms authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
Frequently asked questions
- How many vans make a fleet?
- Two vans is enough for most insurers to consider a mini fleet policy, and from three vans the mainstream fleet market opens up properly.
- Are tools covered in a van fleet policy?
- Not automatically. Motor cover pays for the van, not what is inside it. Tools in transit is a separate section that has to be added, and most insurers require the van to be locked and often that tools are removed overnight.
- Can I put courier work on the same policy as my own goods vans?
- Usually yes, but the whole policy will be rated on the higher-risk use. Declare all use types — mixing them silently is a very common cause of declined claims.
- Do van fleets need goods in transit cover?
- Only if you carry goods belonging to somebody else. If you only carry your own tools and materials, tools in transit is the relevant cover instead.
- Can I add a van mid-policy?
- Yes. Vehicles can be added or removed at any point in the year, with the premium adjusted pro rata. This is one of the main practical reasons growing firms move to fleet cover.
