What is fleet insurance?

Fleet insurance is a single motor policy that covers two or more vehicles owned or operated by the same business or household. The whole fleet is rated as one risk using your claims record, trade and drivers, so every vehicle shares one renewal date and one set of documents.

  • Available from 2 vehicles, with the widest choice from 3 to 5 upwards
  • Cars, vans, HGVs, minibuses and taxis can share one schedule
  • Vehicles can be added or removed mid-term, charged pro rata
  • Priced mainly on confirmed claims experience over 3 to 5 years

How it works

1. Tell us about your fleet

Answer a few questions about your business, your vehicles and your drivers. It takes around three minutes.

2. We introduce you to a broker

Your enquiry is passed to an FCA-authorised fleet insurance broker whose insurers cover your trade and vehicle mix.

3. The broker quotes you

The broker discusses your requirements, provides the quotation and gives any advice. There is no obligation to take cover.

Running vehicles on separate policies means separate renewal dates, separate paperwork and separate premiums. Fleet insurance puts every vehicle you own on a single policy with one renewal date, one insurer and usually one much smaller bill.

Tell us about your business, your vehicles and your drivers using the form below. We pass your details to UK fleet insurance brokers who quote on your risk and come back to you with prices. It is free, there is no obligation, and it takes about three minutes.

What is fleet insurance?

A fleet policy is a single motor insurance contract that covers a group of vehicles owned or operated by the same business or household. Instead of rating each vehicle separately, insurers rate the fleet as a whole using your claims record, your trade, your drivers and the type of vehicles you run.

Most UK insurers class anything from two vehicles upwards as a fleet, though the widest choice of schemes opens up from three or five vehicles. Vehicles can be added and removed mid-term, which is why fleets suit businesses that buy, sell or hire vehicles through the year.

  • One renewal date and one set of documents for the whole fleet
  • Add or remove vehicles during the policy year without starting again
  • Mixed vehicle types on one schedule, from a hatchback to a 44-tonne artic
  • Any-driver, named-driver or age-restricted driving arrangements

What affects your fleet insurance premium

Fleet underwriters price the whole operation, not the individual car. The single biggest factor is your claims experience — a fleet with three years of clean confirmed claims experience will always beat an identical fleet with a string of at-fault claims.

  • Claims history over the last three to five years, confirmed in writing by your current insurer
  • The trade you are in and the goods you carry
  • Driver ages, licence history and whether you allow any driver over 21, 25 or 30
  • Annual mileage and the areas your vehicles operate in
  • Where vehicles are kept overnight and what security is fitted
  • The value and type of vehicles, especially high-value plant, tippers and refrigerated units

What insurers take into account when rating a fleet

Fleet underwriters work from the information supplied to them. These are the details they most commonly take into account.

  • Confirmed claims experience (CCE) letters from the current insurer, covering three to five years
  • Whether driving is open to any driver, restricted by age, or limited to named drivers
  • Whether telematics or dashcams are fitted across the fleet
  • Where vehicles are kept overnight and what security is in place
  • The voluntary excess the business is prepared to carry
  • How far ahead of renewal the enquiry is made

Why quote through Fleet-Quote.co.uk

One policy, one renewal

A fleet policy puts every vehicle on a single schedule with one renewal date instead of separate policies falling due through the year.

Every vehicle type

Cars, vans, pick-ups, lorries, taxis and minibuses can all sit on the same schedule with one renewal date.

Three minutes of your time

You answer once. We pass your enquiry on rather than making you repeat the same questions to several brokers.

FCA-regulated introductions

We are an introducer, not a broker or insurer. Enquiries are only ever passed to firms authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Frequently asked questions

How many vehicles do I need for fleet insurance?
Most UK fleet insurers will quote from two vehicles, and the choice of schemes widens noticeably at three and again at five. Below two vehicles you would normally be looking at a standard motor or multi-car policy instead.
Can I mix cars, vans and lorries on one fleet policy?
Yes. Mixed fleets are completely standard. A single schedule can carry company cars, panel vans, pick-ups, tippers, HGVs, minibuses and even a taxi, provided the underwriter is told about every vehicle type and its use.
What is confirmed claims experience?
Confirmed claims experience, or CCE, is a letter from your current insurer setting out how many claims your fleet has had over the last three to five years and what they cost. Fleet insurers rate on CCE rather than individual no claims bonus, so brokers normally ask for it at quote stage.
Do I need an operator's licence to get fleet cover?
Not for cars, vans and light commercials. If you operate goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes for hire or reward, or over 3.5 tonnes in connection with a business, you will normally need an O-licence, and insurers will ask for the details.
How quickly can cover start?
Same-day cover is often possible once the underwriter has your details and any claims documentation. When you complete our form you can choose a start date within the next 30 days.
Does it cost anything to get quotes?
No. Completing the form is free and there is no obligation to take out a policy. You only pay if you accept a quote and buy cover.
